We had 3 main coaches, Josh, Cedric and Ryan that were leading the sessions. We had roughly 18 children ages 5 up to 14 and they were separated into two groups, the older and younger ones.
Monday - We had 3 main sports that each session would focus on and these were tag rugby, football and hockey. This worked out well as each child enjoyed every sport they participated in. The games for the younger children were basic but they were more advanced for the older children. The coaches gave us a choice on whether we wanted to lead a session or not and we did lead a couple, they also got us to participate so that we weren't just sitting about and this helped us engage more with the children who are now used to us and see us in a more authoritative light as well as someone they can talk to on a not so serious level.
Overall today was a good first day and talking to the coaches and children came naturally to me and I felt comfortable whilst doing so, the coaches were friendly and supportive and gave us roles which we were capable of. The children were also friendly towards us and if anything looked to us for support, which made the whole thing worth while.
Tuesday - Second and final day of the volunteering and it was quite sad knowing that it was the last time spending time coaching with Tottenham hotspurs and the children. Today we focused on football, basketball and some form of cricket. We did the same as Monday when it came to helping encourage the children to participate and you had to be friendly as they were incredibly sensitive and cried a lot. However today was more of a successful day as the children were better behaved which meant that the games worked out much better. We also picked a couple activities we wanted the children to do for example the game 'capture the flag'
I can honestly say it was a pleasure working with the coaches from Tottenham Hotspur and I'm very grateful for the opportunity.
As I've enjoyed working alongside these coaches I decide to pick three more extra days which have turned out to be a good choice as not only is it more experience for myself but gives me more of a chance to utilise my leader skills I learnt during the CSLA week. There is also another coach called Stephen and he is just as friendly as the rest which makes the experience all that more enjoyable. I chose to lead a warm up to get all the children engaged early in the morning this was successful however would have been more effective if the children were less disruptive and better behaved. None the less it has been an enjoyable process and I'm glad I was able to do it.
